Dual Band Waveguide-based detectors

ACST supplies a range of waveguide-based detectors for direct detection of mm-wave/THz signals. These detectors are based on a Schottky diode with integrated passive matching circuitry.

These detectors are frequently referred to as envelope detectors or square-law detectors. They are among the simplest and most sensitive solutions for detecting mm-wave and THz signals at room temperature. A unique advantage of ACST dual-band ZBD detectors is their ability to cover two frequency bands within a single device, enabling multi-band detection without the need for separate modules, this feature is not available in conventional ZBDs.

An important feature of these detectors is their extremely fast response. They are among the fastest solid-state devices operating at room temperature, with an intrinsic response time down to a few picoseconds. In practice, the overall response speed is mainly limited by the surrounding circuitry, such as the low-noise amplifier (if used), as well as connectors and cables.

ACST detectors are based on low-barrier Schottky diodes, also known as zero-bias diodes (ZBD). They operate without any external voltage or current bias, resulting in minimal additional noise. ACST ZBD-based detectors offer excellent performance in terms of sensitivity, noise behavior, linearity, and compatibility with high-speed readout electronics. Combined with their dual-band characteristic, detectors are well suited for power monitoring in industrial and research systems, as well as for high data rate communication links and radiometry applications.
